This saint grew up in the Christian faith from childhood. As he matured, he resolved to bring light to those who served idols. Leaving his native Cilicia, he travelled across towns and villages, spreading God’s word. Many people believed in Christ through his preaching.
When he reached Galatia, Callinicus fell into the hands of Sacerdon, the ruler of Ancyra. Known far and wide for his harsh treatment of Christians, Sacerdon’s reputation struck fear into many. Yet Callinicus stood firm and did not flinch before the tyrant. Boldly declaring his faith, he proclaimed that neither torture nor death could break him, for Christ empowers the martyrs and promises them everlasting life in joy and peace. Sacerdon blazed with anger and ordered his men to beat the saint. Lashes and metal claws tore his body, yet he stayed calm and steady. This only deepened Sacerdon’s rage, and he commanded that the saint be forced into boots lined with sharp nails. In this agonising state, Callinicus was sent to Gangra to be burned alive.
The trek from Ancyra to Gangra proved hard going, and the soldiers escorting him grew weary. Thirsty, they asked Callinicus to find water. Humbly, he prayed to the Lord, and at once, a spring of fresh water burst forth from a rock. The soldiers marvelled at this sign and wished to let him go, but fear of punishment held them back.
When Callinicus reached Gangra, he faced death with courage. After a final prayer, he stepped into the flames and gave his soul to God. Remarkably, his body remained untouched by the fire. Local Christians retrieved his remains and laid him to rest with great honour.
